THIS COMING SATURDAY: THE FIRST WORLDWIDE ONLINE BLINDFOLD DRAUGHTS EVENT
The first Fitter Brein (Brain) online draughts event will take place this Saturday (May 23rd) at 7:00 pm (Dutch time). The free online event is inclusive and will be the first-time blind draughts can be followed live online. You will be given the chance to view a demonstration of blind draughts by triple Dutch draughts champion 15-year old Lisa Scholtens who will take on three opponents.
Contrary to what the name suggests this is not draughts with your eyes closed. In the match 15 -year old Lisa will simultaneously play against three opponents. She won’t see the pieces and will have to play all moves by head. Making the game even harder Lisa will have to not only move all draught pieces on her own, but additionally take into account her strategy of the game alongside her opponent’s tricks, with the goal of taking as many of her opponents’ pieces to win. Lisa’s opponents will have the opportunity unlike Lisa to see their own pieces and hers during the game. Lisa will get more than two hours in the game, but she will not be given extra time even for toilet breaks. This will require total concentration, game knowledge and insight which will enormously challenge for the brain.
Insane
Online draughts is a unique event. According to Zainal Palmans, coordinator of Fitter Brein, this is a worldwide first. "That we go live on Saturday and that everyone can watch ensures that we have great reach, I am happy that everyone can enjoy this dynamic game. Many draftsmen cannot play the game blind and certainly not simultaneously. It is even forbidden in Russia; they think it makes you insane. Lisa is young and talented; I really look forward to Saturday. Blind draughts have something magical.
Additionally (blind) draughter Lisa is looking forward to it. She hopes to attract a wide audience for the Fitter Brein Event. "This is the first time that I have played blind draughts to a large online audience. It will be a long session of about three hours. The practice sessions went through ups and downs. My last simultaneous was on Monday evening against three strong youth players. Then I had been in school all day and I was already quite tired. But I really like it. I like a challenge. "
